Half Day Kirstenbosch Gardens Explorer

Created in 1895 by Cecil John Rhodes, Kirstenbosch is the oldest Botanical Garden in South Africa. Along with its unique and dramatic setting against the slopes of Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch is unique in the fact that it is home to an excellent diversity of endemic flora known as ‘Fynbos’ (fine leaves). There are only 6 Floral Kingdoms in the world, and the smallest (and only one found entirely in one country) is the Cape Floral Kingdom. There are some 9 000 species in this local kingdom, making it the most diverse anywhere.

Today, there are over 22 000 indigenous plants in the Gardens, and a research unit and Library attract Botanists from all over the World. Not only can you enjoy a truly beautiful setting, but the Gardens are also used to display some beautiful sculptures. In summer, there are also a number of Sunday afternoon open-air concerts.

This Tour, capably guided by an amateur Botanical Enthusiast, takes you on an exploration of the Gardens, and will include visits to the plants that are in Flower at the time of your visit. Little signboards and paved paths guide you through the highlights of the Gardens, with most specimens easily identified by Tags and Labels.

Spring time is when the Cape Floral Kingdom comes to life and you are treated to the most spectacular Wild Flower displays. No Garden can exist without the role played by birds, and Kirstenbosch is well known as an ideal place for a number of sunbird species, together with a variety of raptors, geese and guinea fowl.

Ideally, this is a Tour best enjoyed in the mornings, but the Gardens are suitable for visiting throughout the day, and throughout the Year.
