Five Mountain Passes Tour
This Itinerary has been prepared to accommodate the visitor, who has fairly limited time, but who wants to see as much of the scenic beauty as possible. Travel via Sir Lowry’s Pass up over the Hottentots Holland Mountains into the Grabouw Valley, the centre of apple growing country. Turning eastwards, visit the fruit growing region of Villiersdorp, passing the huge Theewaterskloof Dam, stopping en-route to visit some of the fresh fruit Farm stalls found in the area. You the continue over the awesome Franschhoek Pass into the Franschhoek Valley where you stop for a Wine Tasting at one of the many Wine Estates found here. To Paarl, passing the Klein Drakenstein Prison, from where Nelson Mandela was released in Feb 1990, onto the N1, to cross the majestic Drakenstein Mountains, weather permitting, either via the scenic Du Toits Kloof Pass or through the Huguenot Tunnel. You are now in the valley of the Breede River Valley. At the tiny village of Goudini you then traverse the Slanghoek Valley, making your way toward the formidable Elandshoek Mountains via the narrow and spectacular Bains Kloof Mountain Pass. This Pass brings you down into the quaint village of Wellington. Heading southwards pass through the back of Paarl, returning to Cape Town via the N1. As this is a very scenic route bring a camera and binoculars. NB: Depending on the Season and prevailing weather conditions, the Tour may be reversed
