d'Ouwe Werf Country Inn
Established in 1802, d'Ouwe Werf is South Africa's oldest and most historic hotel. Located in tranquil Church Street, Stellenbosch, d'Ouwe Werf retains the graceful Georgian style and ambience throughout. Soft hues and antique furniture have been carefully aligned with the comforts of modern living to create a calm haven. d'Ouwe Werf Country Inn has 32 en suite bedrooms, which are individually styled with antiques collected over the years. Modern facilities, and staff who pride themselves on their friendly, personal and professional service, make each visit an enjoyable and memorable one. There are four room types spread out over five buildings. The rooms either overlook the beautiful landscaped courtyard and garden, or Church Street. The Classic rooms are slightly smaller, and have bath/shower combinations. Furnished in reproduction pieces, they have their own personal charm and character. Luxury rooms are situated in the original building, dating to 1802. These are larger rooms, which are furnished with antiques and decorated and styled individually. This section of the Inn was totally refurbished in 2006. These rooms all have bath/shower combinations and are furnished in Georgian or Victorian style. The Superior rooms, also refurbished in 2006 are spread over three buildings, and are furnished in a traditional, but modern, Cape style. These are slightly larger rooms, and generally have a separate shower and bath. The latest additions at d'Ouwe Werf are the four Governor rooms – each named for early Cape Governors. These are spacious rooms, and decorated in a modern Cape style, and boast walk-in dressing rooms, large bathrooms, with under floor heating. Guests can relax, and enjoy a glass of port in the lounge "de Kromme Elleboog" ("the raised elbow"), or perhaps enjoy the private courtyard's relaxing and tranquil atmosphere, after a day of site seeing, and wine tasting. The "1802 Restaurant" is renowned for its traditional and international cuisine and boasts a wine list that will satisfy even the most sophisticated palate. On sunny days, you can sit outside in the vine-covered coffee garden, and enjoy a slice of cheesecake. Breakfast at d'Ouwe Werf consists of a selection of cereals, fruits, juices, yoghurts, cold meats, and cheeses, muffins, toast and croissants, followed by a choice of warm dishes. Guests can enjoy a dip in the heated swimming pool, and for the more energetic, there are excellent gold courses in the area, as well as guided historical walks, and wine tours.
