Birkenhead House Hermanus

Birkenhead House, perched on the cliffs of Hermanus overlooking the whale watcher’s paradise of Walker Bay accommodates its guests in the utmost luxury and is an exquisite destination for those who enjoy the pinnacle of seaside living.

Decorated to reflect the beauty of its coastal setting, it is adorned with exquisite antiques, and most of the opulently appointed studio suites offer expansive vistas of Walker Bay. Each suite is individually and eclectically decorated. All are air-conditioned, have spacious en suite bathrooms, with luxury amenities, and under floor heating. Rooms vary in design, with the upper floor having private balconies, and the lower floor with a patio.

Dining at Birkenhead House is an experience. Guests can enjoy exceptional hospitality and cuisine. Although seafood delicacies are a daily occurrence, guests are ensured of an excellent choice of dishes. From breakfast onwards, the cuisine is a delight. Guests personal preferences are also taken into consideration.

From May to December the Southern Right whale (Eubalaena australis) graces Walker Bay with its majestic and gentle presence, with August being the height of the calving season. Many calves, with their very protective mothers, are seen from the wonderful vantage points at Birkenhead House. Several species of whales use the bay. The Southern Right Whale predominates, but Bryde’s Whale is also frequently spotted. The Cape Fur Seal and Bottlenose Dolphins are also in abundance.

There are some excellent, and pristine, beaches within easy walk of the House, and apart from the excellent bathing and sun-bathing, you might get to see the endangered Black Oyster Catcher.

Hermanus offers walkers several options, all of which offer spectacular views of the coastline or the beautiful Fynbos-covered Mountains. Fernkloof Nature Reserve, apart from boasting unrivalled birds-eye views of Walker Bay, is also home to some 1 100 plant species. For a more sedate walk, the relatively flat cliff paths that trace the coastline of Hermanus from one end to the other afford enjoyment of rugged scenery and some excellent whale watching.

After a day spent exploring, or whale watching, you might want to indulge the senses at the Spa, which offers an array of massage, aromatherapy and reflexology treatments. Birkenhead House also boasts a fully equipped gym and steam room.
